Ok, most people hear gluten and think I know, I know... bread, pasta, donuts, cake, crackers, pancakes, waffles... I get it. There are many obvious places to find gluten and even more places that you likely would never expect to find it. Here is a list of just a few unexpected places where gluten lives:
Soy sauce
Rice Krispies
Imitation crab (like in sushi)
Some meats (grilled chicken at McDonald's is frozen in a solution with gluten in it)
Labels may alert you to wheat but not other sources of gluten
Anything that says "malt" (barley malt is used as a sweetener)
Some chocolate truffles
Many soups, sauces, gravy
Licorice
Most beef jerky
Various salad dressings
Worcestershire sauce (used in many BBQ sauces, marinades, etc.)
Omelets (can be fluffed with pancake mix)
"Crusted" meats & fish
Most fried items - (even non-gluten items fried in oil that is used for gluten items)
Beer
Oats (do not contain gluten but are most often contaminated)
